Sixth Term Examination Papers (STEP)

Sixth Term Examination Papers, often referred to as STEP, are entrance tests conducted by Cambridge Assessment since 2008 to filter the students for admissions in their undergraduate mathematics courses. OCR Exam Boards used to conduct STEP before Cambridge Assessment took over the charge to administer it.

Other universities, including the University of Warwick, the University of Oxford, the University of Bristol, and Imperial College also accept the STEP scores. Applicants, who have competitive scores in the International Mathematics Olympiad, are exempted to appear for STEP.

Application Procedure

Students must get themselves register in a STEP center through our Entries Extranet to sit STEP, which usually starts from March in the year of application. STEP is typically held in the month of June every year.

Test Structure
There are three papers STEP I, II, and III spanning for three hours’ duration each (with multiple choice questions’ format).

STEP Mathematics I has 13 questions in total – 2 Probability & Statistics, 3 Mechanics, and 8 Pure Mathematics based on A Level Mathematics content.
STEP Mathematics II has 13 questions in total - 2 Probability & Statistics, 3 Mechanics, and 8 Pure Mathematics based on A Level Mathematics content.
STEP Mathematics III has 13 questions in total - 2 Probability & Statistics, 3 Mechanics, and 8 Pure Mathematics based on A Level Further Mathematics content.

Candidates may have to attempt either one or both i.e. STEP I & II to be eligible for admissions in the various universities of Cambridge, it varies with each college. But applicants cannot take STEP I & III in the same year.

Conclusion

Scoring well in STEP is an indicator of potential success at the undergraduate level as the questions appear to be similar in style to undergraduate mathematics. It is also a parameter to check the motivation level of the students since they are required to go through the previous years’ question papers thoroughly.
